SCAREY!!!

Monday Night, 24th, (9:00PM EST) I am going to post what I think is the "scariest" story in the bible. This will be my opinion - not backed up by any profound theological theory, just my thoughts.

What story/incident in the bible scares you the most?? Tell me in your comments. Use the following simple format.

1) Give scripture reference.
2) Describe the incident briefly.
3) Does it have any spiritual application today?

I guess this is kind of a Bible study - we are all facilitators - lets enlighten each other.
Thanks for participating.

Sounds like a fun project...I may be tardy in participating because I'm not sure when my mother is leaving.

Pray for me I'm having my doctor's appointment tomorrow to find out if the problem I had Thursday was just an ocular migraine or if its retinal detachment. Ocular migraines are harmless, so I vote for that. A friend of mine who used to work for an eye doctor was disturbed with my HMO for putting me off for so long, but I have taken it easy and haven't been on the computer much either. Thanks for your prayers!

Also I see Word Verification is gone as you mentioned :)

"That is the way it will be at the end of the world. The angels will come and separate the wicked people from the godly, throwing the wicked into the fire. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 13:49-50)

This passage scares me for my loved ones who are not covered by the blood of Jesus...who do not acknowledge Him as their Lord and Savior. I do not want to be separated from them, but I know that sad day is coming, except for the Grace of God and my Hope being fulfilled.

This is an interesting way to blog...a Bible study through comments. Good idea! Sorry I missed out on the earlier contest. I told Paul about the segway, and he thought that was real cool. Gonna get one to use on the campground?

Papa, this is a fabulous idea. I love it!!! I am heading off to bed but am anxious to get back with my scripture. Although, I have to say I share CDC's fear in that scripture in regards to our unsaved family. I hate thinking about it! My grieves for them now, today, but it hopes for their tomorrow!

For me Papa....any scripture that has to do with backbiting or gossip....
especially Psalm 41:6 which says, "They visit me as if theya re my friends, but all the while, they gather gossip, and when they leave, they spread it everywhere".
I can't think of anything more painful than to be betrayed that way.
Anytime we do not put others higher than ourselves, and fall into a trap of making them look a little off to make ourselves look better is a scary place. Whether it be face-to-face or via email etc., the result are still the same. To me that's scary, and causes division in the body.

Robin - Praying for you! Let us know how your appt. goes!

Cdc - THAt is a scarey thought! Mine is actually a story in the bible.

TAm - Hope you get to feeling better. Take two oreo's every four hours w/milk - not Nyquil. Get some VapoRub put on your chest - maybe Brandy will do it!

GG - gossip is vicious - and so easy to do and it is very destructive.

I wrote this post a little while back, this is scripture that scares me...I want to always make sure I am using all that HE gives me, including open doors to talk to others, reaching out to someone in any way that He wants for me...I believe my salvation is secure, but holy fear never hurt me, actually it is a good place for me to be. Hope you are having a good day!

It isn't a passage in the Bible, but a prayer that I was instructed to say every night at my bedside:

"Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take."

To understand how much the words "If I should die before I wake" bothered me, my mother was sick all her life. I lived with the spector of death through out my childhood. She passed away when I was 13.

It usually took my a while just to close my eyes for fear I wouldn't open them again. This my be one reason I am a night owl. If I could I would happly go with out sleeping.

I did some research on the background of this prayer and some references I found where:

1) "Christ appeared, said the writer of Hebrews, to "release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage." (Hebrews 2:15)"

2) "Jesus said, "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." (John. 3:18)"

3) "The Christian knows physical death will come. He can look it straight in the face. To be certain, he will not enjoy the pain of the dying process, but death itself is not the problem. As a Christian he knows that he will be in heaven after he dies. Like the Bible author Paul he asserts, "to die is gain." (Philippians 1:21)"

4) "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.... (John 11:25-26)"

Romans 1:19 "They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them."

This one scares me because so many loved ones are rejecting Him. My heart grieves for them.

But I also agree with Debs passage as well too. How can we share the truth of the gospel when so many of us can't even get along ourselves?

And Ed, wow. I can see how that would have scared you too. I am so sorry.

Wow, I like everybody's so far! I don't know as if I have one, I'd have to spend some time looking....which would be a good thing. ;-)

I do have to say though, I really relate to Ed's.... I went through a period in high school where I was afraid to go to sleep at night b/c I went to a memorial service for a friend of mine who was a jehovah's witness, and they said he wasn't really "dead" he was just in a permanent "sleeping" state....that FREAKED ME OUT. And like Ed, I always felt creeped out by that line in that prayer.

Ed, thanks for those verses!! I love them.
And Papa, great thing you've got going on today! ;-)

Darla - When God gives us gifts or talents he asks us to use them. Remember the story in the bible of the man who did not use his talents (Matthew 25)??

ED - thanks fo your input! I always cringe when others say things that strike fear in Christianity. THats why I did this post. There is some fear that goes with it. However, that's not why Christ came. My next post will be just that: "What is the greatest thing Jesus did?" That was a question in my SS lesson this past week.

Robin - I will check that out asap!

Tam - I agree, the choice is simple but not always easy. That sounds familiar! Ii have many friends and family that still choose not to. That does scare me.

Indian Lake Papa said...

Brandy - Christ never intended to scare us. The only ones in His day that feared him did not know him. You have chosen not to fear him. Sleep well tonight!

Sometime after 9pm est tonight I will put my scariest story - no one has come close yet! :o)

What used to be my scariest story in the Bible was-

I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was cold and you did not clothe me...

...although you did things in my name, Leave me I never knew you.

I was talking to my husband Jeff, I asked him what would be the scariest bible story in the bible. He mention Lazurus and the Rich Man, Luke 16:19-31.
It is really long, so I am not going to type it out. But the small version is, The Rich man and Lazurus both die, the angels take lazuruas to heaven and the Rich man goes to hell. The Rich man sees Lazurus from hell and asks Abraham if Lazurus could get him some water. Abraham tells him no. Then The Rich man wants Lazurus to go tell his friends about their sins and that they need to change their ways. Abraham tell him it is too late. I just read this last night for one of my bible stories. It did make me scared that we need to be telling people while we are alive to embrace Jesus and except him into our hearts. Because once you are gone, it is final. Tanya

Darla - I think of that story often. We turn our heads too often. I almost drove by a car last year down here that blew out a tire right in front of me. After a few seconds I turned around and went back and helped an elderly couple change their tire - we shared Christ as well.

Tanya - The words that none of us want to hear from Christ when we step into eternity; "sorry, too late!"

Am I too late??

Honestly, there used to be quite a few that scared me. And I walked away from the Lord for years because I didn't like being guilted or scared into following.

It was only when I learned of His love that I responded. And now when I read the scary ones, I realize that He's usually saying that the outward stuff He ain't buying! He wants our hearts...

Knowing He loves me makes it easy to give Him that! =D
