No Thanks for the Memories!

Today Wednesday I went back to the Horse Rescue farm. The two pictures posted were taken last year when I was there - but today I was anxious to see how Magic is doing. He is doing okay - better. But he still clings to his memories. Magic a beautiful 12 year old Arabian Stallion still fears and has little trust of humans. Theresa the manager he trusts - she has never hurt him.

When Magic arrived at the farm in 2007 he was petrified. Not mean, not aggressive, but in a survival mode. He was physically scarred from beatings he had with 2x4's, chains, ropes and leather straps - terrified of humans.

The picture below is of Magic after he was sedated with a dart gun so that we could clean him up, trim his feet, give him shots and do dental work. I am the one in the tan shirt and white hat. I was in charge of the video camera.

Today, a year later I approached Magic from outside the fence - he backed away from the fence and wheezed nervously - staying out of reach - yes, his memories of pain from years past are still there. Even though I have no intentions of hurting him, his memories take charge.

It is a sad day for all of us if we let our bad memories take charge of our future. We need to learn to trust, we need to learn to risk love.

Theresa would never allow anyone to hurt Magic, yet he only trusts a very little. He does not understand that he is now in a safe place, sheltered by the love at Beauty's Haven farm.

Oh Magic - what you are missing - how sad.

Poor Magic! But he has made progress so that's great news! Horses are such special creatures!

Crossview - What is sad is he is a stallion - and not aggressive! HE is just afraid of people - I love to feed him and go in with him - he is beautiful! He could have been such a wonderful horsE!

I love your heart for God's creation! I grew up near horses and loved them dearly. For a while we had on, and also helped take care of the neighbors. For some reason my favorite was the horse who regularly trotted under branches to knock me off. I got used to riding sideways in such situations, but also took many a tumble. It always made my parents giggle, but I was determined to have a relationship with this particular horse.

It is very hard to lose the fear of being beaten, for horses and men. You are right Papa, trust is such an easy thing to lose, and so very hard to get back.

At least Magic has found a good home at Theresa's farm. We can only hope that one day soon he will regain his trust.

Roxx - I worked at the rescue for two winters - I learned a lot about horses from Theresa. They indeed are a very special creation.

ED - HE is - he is learning very slowly, just as some of us have, he is a beautiful animal. IF you were here - Magic would be one of our first stops.

Annie - yesterday I handled 20 plus horses, only Magic shied away - memories can hold us back. He is slowly coming around - we found a weakness - carrots! LOL

Sometimes the wounds have been so deeply inflicted in our hearts, it's almost impossible to gain freedom from the memories. Not that we can't through Christ, but the work takes times as He gently restores us to Himself and His healing ways.

Heaven will be an amazing reality.

I'm so sorry for Magic and so sick of abuse toward animals and humans.

MIchelle - memories can handicap us as well as horses. IF Magic was rid of his fears I would own that horse - he is such a prince.

I have always been fascinated by horses, but when you live on a tiny island like I do, the odds are against my ever meeting one... much less owning one.

Ah well, I shall live vicariously by popping over here from time to time. ;)
